I keep getting calls and texts from Cabot Financial about some Michael O'Neill supposedly having an account with them. The problem is, thats not me at all but they just wont take my number off their list. I've blocked two different landlines and three mobiles already, and now theyve switched to a brand new landline number. When they rang last, I played crying babies sounds from YouTube, and after about 10 minutes they hung up. Pretty annoying situation!

Cabot or DLC are after a debt thats 9 years old. I heard they purchase old debts and keep bothering you till you pay, but I was told they can't actually force you to pay, even if they threaten to take you to court. Since the debt is no longer owed to the original company, you dont owe anything to Cabot or DLC whatsoever.

I get these calls too. A woman with a foreign accent rang me at work and asked me to confirm my personal info before explaining why she was calling. I told her I wasn’t allowed to handle personal matters during work hours. Then she said she’d ring me on my mobile instead, which I agreed to, but then she asked me for my number! I told her nope, if she didn’t already have it, I wasn’t about to give it. Pretty clear she wasn’t telling the truth. If she really wanted me to verify my details, you’d think she’d already have them, but clearly not!

Just like loads of others, they rang me saying it was about my account, but wouldn’t say who they were or what it was about until I gave them my personal details. I told them I’ve got two bank accounts that are perfectly alright and I don’t owe anything (never even had a credit card, so no debt to worry about). I asked them to tell me who they were first and the lady with an Indian accent said she couldn’t do that. I said well, looks like we’re stuck here - I’m not giving you anything and you’re not telling me anything, so let’s just call it quits. Really glad I thought to look up the number online, was genuinely stressing this might be something serious.

I looked up a few more numbers linked to them and saved every one in my phone under a contact named ‘debt collectors ignore’. This way, I can just block or reject their calls straight away. Honestly, I never pick up when they ring and they eventually give up calling. One tip I find really useful is to just ignore calls from numbers I don’t recognise or those coming through as withheld.
