Keep in mind, the Chinese embassy won't call you unless it's something really serious, like if you’re suddenly stuck somewhere dangerous, such as your accommodation turning into a war zone. Other than emergencies like that, they never ring you up.

I'm pretty sure these calls are spam from some dodgy scammers out of China or Taiwan. They seem to be grabbing people's numbers illegally and keeping them in some sketchy database. The cops around the world really need to step up and put a stop to these muppets.

Received a call earlier from a bloke who said he was ringing from the Chinese Embassy and somehow he knew my full name. When he began asking about my wellbeing, I immediately got a dodgy feeling and decided to cut the call. The only time I handed over my UK number along with my full name in Chinese was for my passport renewal at the Chinese Embassy. Really doubtful that any of the staff there would be selling off my personal details.

This is definitely a scam. I usually just tell them to bugger off and go mess about with their mum or something rude like that. If they don't even know their own parents, I go further and say they should be sodomised by donkeys or something equally absurd. It’s a quick way to put them off.

When I finally talked to them, they claimed I was caught up in some money laundering scheme or that there were problems with my visa - total rubbish. Honestly, it became so irritating. My other half got a call claiming to be from the Chinese Embassy, saying her National Insurance number had been used to get medical treatment in Guangzhou recently. Before that, the caller rang from a different number and told her to verify the number on the Embassy’s website saying it was the same one. Obviously, this is a scam and these criminals are faking the Embassy’s phone number. Thankfully, it never went further but I reckon they were trying to trick her into sending money to some "escrow account" while they supposedly figured out who had the treatment. Then all the usual nonsense about legal trouble, passport cancellation, fines and jail time would follow. Total rubbish!
