You gotta wonder what shady stuff is going on behind this so called "business" or "marketer". I got my domain through Hostagor and they been alright for me, but I stupidly forgot to pay for privacy protection. Basically that means your address, phone, email and name get dumped into the hands of spammers, hackers and scammers looking to steal your info, not to mention fake marketing calls (which is annoying enough already!)

I got a ring from this number not long after I’d signed up for a domain with 123-reg, which came with a flood of annoying emails from web devs, hosting companies and the like. Turns out you have to head into your 123-reg account and tweak the email and contact settings. By default, they opt you in to marketing messages from all sorts. Also, don’t forget to text ‘TPS’ to 85095 to add your phone to the Telephone Preference Service - it really helps cut down on spam.

I’m guessing it was GoDaddy since I recently got a domain through 123-reg and have had calls from numbers I reckon belong to GoDaddy, plus tonnes of spam emails. Might just drop them a message on Twitter, people seem to get replies that way. Oh, and FYI, the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) has a new thing - if you want to stop unsolicited calls to your mobile, just text TPS and your email to 85095. Marketers should be checking that list before ringing.

These so-called "web development firms," often from India, grab your info from "whois" - that domain lookup thing. Unless you pay your domain registrar a small charge (around £5 per domain) to keep your info private, you and I will continue to get these annoying calls since our details are out there for anyone to see.

How on earth did they get hold of my details? I contacted the company where my domain is registered but they couldn’t explain the leak or help me out. The caller had a strong Indian accent and sounded like they were working in a call centre. I didn’t get the company name since I was quite shaken up. When I attempted to call back, all I got was an automated voicemail. Definitely a warning sign!

Got a call earlier where they asked for me by name and then just ended the call straight away. Strange behaviour if you ask me.

i got a call from that indian bloke everyone mentions, from a firm called accenda or maybe accenza. i told him i wasn’t keen. after that, they kept ringing loads of times and just hung up without saying a word. i tried ringing the london 020 number back but nobody picks up.

Thanks for the useful comments everyone, they really helped. I started getting emails from them too, but the address keeps changing so it’s not caught by any spam filters. I got a call from 02071936574 offering development services, which I'm pretty sure they found through a whois search. I’ve already put them on the TPS do-not-call list.

This number seems UK, but I found out they actually operate out of India, just like Adam mentioned earlier. They run another line too. When you register a new domain, they'll get your contact info. You can pay roughly £9 monthly to keep your info hidden, otherwise they can easily find out who owns the domain, including your email and phone details. - caller: 02071936574

There’s a company called Accenza, which apparently operates out of India and pitches website design services, especially to people who just registered their domains. They’ve been ringing me nonstop - twice on a UK number and four times from different US numbers! (The US calls came from numbers registered to various phones in Maine and Ohio, so definitely just a cover.) I answered once because I was worried it might be an old acquaintance of mine in the States who’s been a bit of a nuisance lately, and since it was his visa expiry day, I thought he might be in some kind of trouble. they said they were from a company named accenza, but the call came from a london number. the indian man on the phone had loads of background noise, and you could barely hear them speaking probably in an indian language. they tried to sell me website development services. yeah right, i’m definitely not trusting some random firm or person i’ve never heard of with my website.
