My 96-year-old mum has been getting calls from this number where a guy calling himself Michael Smith tries to convince her she’s owed money from a "Home protection policy" and asks for her bank card info. Luckily, I’ve taught her not to share any details and to tell him to speak to me instead. But before I stepped in, he managed to swindle £250 twice from her account by somehow getting her card info. I've since cancelled her card and moved her to a new bank account. Now, he’s trying again, hoping to get the new card details from her. Every time she tells him to call me back, he just ends up hanging up. Thankfully, we got the money refunded through the bank’s fraud department. Still, this Michael Smith bloke is out there, targeting elderly and vulnerable folks. Something really needs to be done to stop him.

My mum, who’s 96, keeps getting calls from someone using the name Michael Smith. He tries to convince her to hand over her bank card info, claiming she’s owed money from something he calls a "Home protection policy". Luckily, I’ve taught her not to share any details and to just tell him to speak to me. But before I stepped in, he’d already managed to scam her out of two payments of £250 each by getting her card information. I had to cancel her card and switch her account altogether. Now, he’s having another go, trying to get the new details. Whenever she tells him to contact me, he just hangs up. We got the money back through the bank’s fraud team, thankfully. But this bloke is still at it, preying on older, vulnerable people. He really ought to be stopped.

I got a call that sounded legit, from someone claiming to be from a tenant reference company I’ve dealt with before. They tried to get me to pay for some kind of contents and liability insurance. It wasn’t until I did a quick search of the number and saw the comments here that I started to get suspicious. Just a heads up, these fraudsters are pretty slick - this one even left a voicemail pretending to be an actual staff member from the real referencing firm.
