Just got a call about five minutes back from a really courteous chap offering half-price deals on doors and windows. I told him I’d had my windows done not long ago, and he was quick to say sorry and wished me a good afternoon, thanking me for my time. When I asked quite sharply how he got my number, since I’m ex-directory, he said the company ‘bought it from a list’. I could tell he noticed I wasn’t happy about getting an unsolicited sales call, so he said he’d get my details taken off their list and I wouldn’t hear from them again... but I’m not expecting that to happen.

I’ve read that lots of people get asked “can you hear me?” on calls like this. Apparently it’s a dodgy scam where if you say “yes,” they record your voice and use it for other frauds. If you google the ‘say yes’ scam, there’s plenty info about how it works.
