He flat out denied it, so I told him I was actually a police officer. He didn’t even flinch and just went on about some HMRC agents waiting outside my (old) flat ready to arrest me. At that point, I lost it completely, my mind just went wild thinking about them doing that to some poor bloke clueless about what was going on. I replied calm but deadly serious, "You deceitful, thieving git, if you ever ring me again, I’ll fly out to India, drag you to hell and back, then hunt down your whole bloody family and sort them out too." Then the line just went dead.

This was definitely a scam from HMRC. Real officials would never ring up and chat like that.

Got a ring from them today. Immediately knew it wasn’t HMRC because they wouldn’t call like that or leave such a scary, harsh voicemail. It’s the kind of thing that could freak a lot of folks out. I’m just gonna block the number straight away.

So I called the number back from my home phone, not the cell they used to call me, and as soon as I gave them my name, the guy acted like he already knew what was going on. Wasn’t like he was checking a screen or anything. Then he asked if I had a solicitor to defend me in court, and I said no, but I'd sort it if needed. Next thing, he just ended the call!

For the last few hours, I was totally freaking out because someone was telling me I was behind on a big tax bill and could end up in court if I didn't pay up. Should have looked this site up as soon as they rang. Seeing all your comments here really put my mind at ease. Cheers to everyone who shared their experiences!

Just got a call from some scammer trying to frighten me. Don’t ever press 1, seriously. Best thing is to hang up straight away. Then, drop an email to [email protected] with when it happened, the number that called you, the number you answered on, and a short note about what they said. Helps keep others safe.

Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences - I followed the tip to get in touch with HMRC after receiving what turned out to be a phishing call. It was pretty frightening since they pretended to be HMRC and even mentioned solicitor action, which I knew wasn't legit because HMRC wouldn't speak like that. I've now blocked the number to avoid any more hassle.

Got a call again from some dodgy lot pretending to be from HMRC. They said they were right outside my flat and were about to arrest me. I didn't hold back and told them if they ever called back, I'd fly all the way to India just to sort them out face to face. The bloke quickly ended the call after that!

Beware of this number, it’s definitely a scam. They rang me saying that either me or my solicitor needed to get in touch with them straight away. When I called back, an Indian guy picked up really quick but didn’t say a word. I stayed silent for a moment and then he just hung up right in my ear. No mention of HMRC or anything official, they never gave any options when I first got the call. Total scam, don’t trust it!

This has got to be a fake HMRC scam. I kept ringing the number from a private line and an Indian voice picked up super quick every single time - doesn’t seem like legit HMRC at all! Reported it straight away to HMRC, hope they look into it. Would be great if HMRC were that quick in real life though!
