7 monthsI got a call from someone claiming to be with British Gas, saying they wanted to verify our details because we might have been billed incorrectly. He sounded quite convincing and had some info that seemed legitimate, but he was pressing for more personal details. He spoke very nicely and stayed composed when I called it out as a possible scam. About halfway through the convo, I got uneasy and told him I’d check directly with British Gas. After contacting them, I found out it was definitely a SCAM and not an official call at all.British Gas7 monthsGot a call from someone claiming they wanted to take £1000 out of my account, but then my bank rang me and I ended the call straight away.7 monthsGot a call from someone claiming to be with British Gas, sounded like they had an Indian or Pakistani accent. They said we had some credit due, but when I asked for the exact figure as I had my bills right there, they said they weren’t from the accounts dept so couldn’t give me that info 🙄. Then they tried saying our smart meter was faulty, but I told them we manually record our meter readings every month. After that, they just hung up on me!British Gas8 monthsGot a call from someone saying they were from the meter reading team, saying we’d been charged too much. Told them to send the details by email since we get loads of calls like this and I wasn’t convinced it was actually British Gas. She kept pushing that she just needed to verify some info. I told her again to email us and not to phone back, then I ended the call.British Gas9 monthsGot a call saying they was from British Gas, but it was a total scam. First, they said they were from the meter reading team, then they tried to get info about renewing stuff. When I gave them made-up details, they didn’t even question me. They also had the wrong business name - used our trading name instead of the official limited company name that we use for billing. They were really pushy too.British Gas9 monthsThis number kept ringing me and when I got in touch with the phone provider it's linked to, they said the number isn’t actually active right now. Pretty sure it’s a spoofed caller, so best not to share any details with them.11 monthsSomeone rang, said they were from British Gas meter readings, but couldn’t give me any previous readings they supposedly had on file. I kept them on the line for a good 10 mins, acting interested. Then they said I’d be marked as unhelpful in their system. When I asked if they needed my full name to put it on record, they just ended the call! :)11 monthsSo I got a call from someone saying they were with British Gas, trying to check our meter number because of some problem. She kept repeating “The British Gas” like it was some official title. Definitely felt aggressive and kept pushing me for info. Didn’t even know our account number herself. Seems like a total scam to me. I ended the call straight away.British Gas11 monthsSome woman, said she was ringing from British Gas about meter numbers not matching up, wanted the MPN or something. She had an Indian accent and was really pushy, trying to get me to provide a bill for her. I told her I’d check and call back but asked for her number and she couldn’t give one. I then looked up the number here to see if it was legit and confronted her, but she just denied everything and kept pushing for my details. I ended the call after that.British GasMPN11 monthsGot a call from a woman with an Indian accent claiming she was from Smartest Energy, trying to verify my energy info. She asked me to confirm the company name and address, then wanted my MPan number to check an invoice. I told her I wouldn’t give it over the phone and asked her to email me instead. She rang back saying she’d have to send me an email for anything else, but I never received one. Definitely felt like a scam to me.11 monthsGot a call from a woman with an Indian accent who said she was ringing from YU energy. She wanted to check some details on my bill. I just ended up blocking the number.YU Energy11 monthsShe asked me for my MPAN number and kept insisting on checking other info as well, seemed like she wanted to switch me over to some other provider. I gave her no info at all. The woman had a strong Indian accent, definitely felt like a scammer more than a genuine caller. When I said I wasn’t interested, she actually told me I wasn’t very polite! She phoned back three times before I finally lost my temper and gave her a proper telling off in my best angry Scots voice.11 monthsGot a call about my meter number, she claimed I had paid too much. She was quite cheeky and pushy about it.11 monthsI got a call from a woman with an Indian accent claiming she was from EDF. She wanted to verify my MPAN number, but I told her I didn’t have that info and ended the call. Since then, I’ve blocked the number. He kept insisting he was legit. I ended the call and rang up Octopus myself - turns out it’s a total scam.Octopus EnergyOctopus1 yearGot a call from someone saying they were British Gas. They rattled off my street number, town and postcode, saying folks round here had been charged too much. Then they went on about mixing up our details with the neighbours and asked for the meter supply number. I acted a bit clueless, just asking them loads of questions. After a bit, the woman passed the call to a bloke called "Jacob". I told him straight up, “You’re the supplier, you have all my info, just bill me properly,” a few times and then they just cut off. Pretty obvious scam if you ask me.British GasJacob1 yearI had a call from someone pretending to be from an energy company. Seemed dodgy from the start, like they were trying to get my details or something. Definitely sounded like a scam to me.1 yearSomebody called saying they were from Smartest Energy, at first I was wary. They knew my supply number and all my details which freaked me out a bit. Then they asked when my contract was up, and I stupidly told them. After that they wanted to know which company I got my gas from. I had a feeling it was dodgy from the beginning - sneaky tactic!1 yearI got two calls from someone saying they were from Valda Energy, trying to verify my meter number because they claimed there were some issues with meter readings in our area that might cause overbilling. When I asked for a callback number, she refused to provide one and insisted she'd stay on the phone while I checked the details. She was quite pushy about it. When I mentioned I thought the call was a scam, she called me paranoid and said it was my choice whether or not to be overcharged, then abruptly ended the call.Valda Energy1 yearI called to double check the supply number on my bill, and surprisingly they gave me the right one. Then they asked if I had gas, which I don't, and after I told them, they just ended the call.1 yearAvoid these energy brokers, they're a total scam. They even gave me a number to ring back, think twice before calling that one: 0800 1311669.1 yearSomeone called saying they were from British Gas, saying there was an issue with my meter reading. I told them it didn’t add up as I’ve got a smart meter that sends readings automatically. They asked me to confirm my MPAN number but I refused. When I pushed back, they put me through to a bloke claiming to be a Supervisor, who didn’t want to send anything over email, then just ended the call. The first caller started whispering when I said I wouldn’t give any details on the phone - total scam, no doubt.British Gas1 yearLooks like a classic utility rip-off. They're after your details so they can sneakily change your energy supplier without you realising. What’s sneaky is they don’t straight up ask for your info, they just want you to agree that what they say is right. Best bet? Don’t give them anything, or as I did, act daft and keep confusing them until they get fed up and hang up!1 yearSome bloke saying he was from PE Energy rang up askin for the MPRN number on my bill.
