Today, my 87-year-old mother received a rather alarming phone call from a supposed representative of HMRC. This woman claimed that my mother had been overpaid and could potentially face legal action. She then urged my mum to press ‘1’ for further instructions. Thankfully, my mother had the good sense to terminate the call right there. It does make one wonder, though, how many elderly folks might panic and fall victim to such a scam.

When I finally got through to a chap in a call centre, he claimed to be called Paul Jones - which I found rather amusing because that definitely wasn’t his real name!
