I foolishly gave him control of my computer because of a pop-up problem I was having. He then went on about hackers and I asked him, how can I be sure you’re not the hacker yourself since you’ve got into my computer? Now I’m stressing about my phone and PC security! Later, I came across the McAfee helpline number. McAfee weren’t much better, only interested in making me pay since it wasn’t really a tech fault but just annoying pop-ups.

I really hope these awful scammers get what's coming to them and suffer for a long time.

Something similar happened to me recently - this scary message popped up saying my computer was under attack and I had to ring a certain number immediately. I called because my Safari just froze and I couldn’t navigate away. A guy with a strong foreign accent claimed he was from Microsoft and needed to remotely access my PC to get rid of hackers. Obviously, I didn’t buy any of it and told him there’s no way I’d give him access to my computer. After I hung up, I had to force quit Safari and reboot my laptop. When it restarted I saw a strange login screen flickering just before the password prompt showed up. Now I’m worried to change my passwords because it feels like they might still be watching my screen. When I checked my security settings, I was shocked to see something called Remote Systems Manager listed as sharing my screen! Seriously, what should I do next?

Spent the whole weekend 8th/9th August and the morning of Tuesday 11th August trying to fix a problem with emails - the website wouldn’t accept my login details or password. After finally finishing a call with a BT support advisor and browsing the BT website for some news, Safari suddenly showed me a scary warning message. I couldn’t close Safari or even take a screenshot of the warning, which told me to call 020 3544 1067 right away because my computer might be compromised. I didn’t trust the message at all, especially as I’d just finished talking to an advisor from India a few minutes earlier. I rang the number anyway, but the person I spoke to didn’t really explain what was going on, so I ended the call. Since then, Safari hasn’t been behaving normally when I click on links in BT emails. I’ve taken some steps to protect my device since then, but I won’t be clicking on any BT email links again or trusting the BT website as much.

Just saw this number show up on my screen and gave it a ring, felt a bit iffy about it immediately. Luckily, I didn’t let the person on the other end link up with my computer.

My computer keeps showing these annoying pop-ups that keep pushing me to ring a certain number to supposedly fix some adware or malware problems. I can’t seem to close the page at all, and the only way to get rid of it is to reboot my laptop. It’s really frustrating!
