Today I got called twice by someone saying there was a file opened against me and that my National Insurance number was on hold. They kept pushing me to press '1' to speak with the case officer. Definitely a scam like a few others have mentioned here. Even though I’m signed up with the Telephone Preference Service, it clearly doesn’t seem to prevent these dodgy calls.

I wasn’t home when they called, but they left a voicemail pretending to be from some "Law Enforcement Agency". They said there was a lawsuit against me using my national insurance number and told me to press 1 to get back to them. I just got rid of the message right away. For one, legal actions would be filed under your actual name, not your NI number. Also, the phrase "Law Enforcement Agency" isn’t what we say here in the UK - it sounds very American. Seriously, don’t answer or ring them back!

She was so worried she actually went to her bank to make sure no money had vanished from her account. These nasty people really scared her silly. Don't fall for this con, they're fishing for your private info like your NI number. I messed about with the bloke's accent and got him proper annoyed till he gave up and ended the call. Total SCAM - luckily, I didn't fall for it and just ended the call straight away. I've reported the number to Action Fraud so hopefully the police can track them down.
