Received a call on our mobile, seemingly attempting to reach a family member regarding what we suspect might be a debt issue. However, they refused to divulge any details or clarify the reason for their call.

I've received a couple of calls this week on my work phone from these absolute nuisances. How they managed to get hold of my work number is a puzzle, but I have a sneaking suspicion it came from the cheeky ex-wife of mine. Honestly, there ought to be some sort of regulation to prevent these lowlifes from ringing anyone's work line. Better yet, they should be banned from making these calls altogether. This type of cold calling is simply the worst. Why not turn the tables? When they start their spiel, ask them for ‘security details’ before divulging anything about yourself. It’s only fair, right? They’ve got their own script, so why shouldn’t you prepare one too? Consider asking them these questions: 1) Their name (and ask them to spell the surname for clarity) 2) To verify their address (both business and personal, including the postcode) 3) To confirm their contact number (even if they called you) 4) To state their date of birth 5) To provide their secret answer Chances are, they won’t be able to provide a single one of those details, so simply refuse to share any of yours. Quote the Data Protection Act, and let them know they’ve failed their own security checks. Inform them that if they dare to call back, you’ll be asking the same questions, and should they continue to flounder, you’ll report them for fraud and seek an injunction.
