Beware of those bogus tech support alerts! Don’t fall for the pop-ups saying your computer’s infected. Just hit ctrl+alt+del, open up Task Manager, shut down any suspicious programs running, and then run a free virus scan like Super Anti Spyware. That’s the best way to keep your PC safe without getting scammed.

I nearly got caught out but thankfully I didn’t end up buying that supposed firewall a bloke called Richard Cruze was pushing. Since I’m not great with computers and was on my own, I wanted to get my daughter’s take first. I really believed he was genuine when he was telling me which keys to hit and seemed to be controlling my PC. It made me feel awful when I realised he’d actually broken into my system. If it happens again, I’ll just end the call straight away.

Make sure you check your device for any malware after receiving calls like these, scammers often try to install it. The most important thing to remember is to NEVER trust a random caller out of the blue. If you do, you’re likely to get scammed. Always report any suspicious calls to the proper authorities who monitor these things. You can find more info and report scams on the National Cyber Security Centre’s site under their PHISHING category: 'https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/collection/phishing-scams'

This was totally dodgy - I almost got caught out. I clicked a pic on MSM, then a virus warning popped up with this number flashing. They were pretending to be from Microsoft Support and wanted me to pay £149 for a firewall. Don’t trust anything like www.logmein.com - just switch your device off right away. After that, run a proper scan and ring your bank to check everything’s alright.
