I usually consider myself quite sharp but this one really threw me off. I was busy and didn’t bother checking this site before answering. Definitely a lesson well learnt. The bloke sounded really professional, said he was from HMRC and told me I was about to face prosecution over some dodgy tax stuff. Got a missed call, rang back and they said they were from HMRC, asking for my reference number. I told them they phoned me, so they should tell me what it's about. Had a very similar run-in. The caller said they were from HMRC, but their accent was so hard to understand, I could hardly make it out. Then they dropped my maiden name on me, which was weird.
