When I confronted them, expressing my suspicion that it was a scam, they went so far as to offer to ring me back from the official HMRC number, which they actually did! It's quite puzzling how they manage this trickery. After speaking with HMRC directly, they’ve confirmed that they would never reach out via phone; all communication would be conducted through official letters and documentation.
