Naturally, I inquired if it was indeed a scam, to which he cited some official-sounding organisation. He mentioned he would call back in a few days to sort out the delivery of a cheque. He kept his promise and rang me again, but when I told him I was unavailable, he insisted on trying again on Wednesday, 20th November, at 10 o'clock. I'm intrigued to see if he follows through with that call.
