I picked up the phone, and the caller launched into a spiel about some competition. I thought it best to say “cheerio” and ended the call.

They rang me again, but I couldn't catch it in time. When I attempted to return the call, it turned out to be an unrecognised number. Quite peculiar!

On the 26th of January, 2016, I received a rather peculiar call from a woman with a foreign accent. She claimed to be representing something like UK Home Sales or Home Savers - the name was a bit hazy in my mind. She launched into a spiel about a questionnaire I was allegedly participating in and how I stood a chance to win a massive prize of £250,000! When she requested my address, I cleverly supplied her with a made-up one, along with a phoney postcode for good measure. I decided to throw a spanner in the works and told her I needed to quickly turn off my cooker, leaving her on the line. She responded with a rather bewildered “oh okay” and I held the call for a couple of minutes while I busied myself with other matters. Upon my return, she was still going on about the potential cash prize, so I took the phone over to where my family was gathered - my mum, brother, and sister - so we could all share in this unexpected entertainment. I cheekily claimed my rice was bubbling over and popped the phone down in a separate room for a moment, all four of us chuckling at the absurdity of it all. Once I picked the phone up again, it was evident that she was thoroughly puzzled by my antics. I then performed a little charade of having poor reception, acting as though I was struggling to hear her, complete with exaggerated 'hzz' noises as if I was on the brink of losing the signal. After a good seven minutes of this amusement, she finally hung up, and I must say, it was a right giggle! A word to the wise: never divulge your real address, contact number, or bank details to these sorts! Instead, use such calls as an opportunity for a bit of light-hearted fun and a much-needed laugh!
