I got two robo calls saying they were from HMRC and threatening legal trouble. Even though I was pretty sure it was a scam, I rang back the number. The first time it just rang out, but on the second try I got through. It sounded more like a dodgy call centre than any official HMRC line. When I asked who they were, the person said they were from the HMRC investigation team. I told them that was odd cos the number doesn’t show up as HMRC anywhere, and then they just hung up on me. They never mentioned the persons name or gave any ref or NHI number, so right away it seems dodgy. There's no way to tell who they're even trying to contact, which makes it seem like a total scam. If you get a call like that, it can be pretty worrying though. Best thing is to just hang up and not bother with it. HMRC definitely wouldn’t call you in that manner.

Someone pretending to be from HMRC rang one of my clients, saying they owed more than £2,000 from a debt that’s over a decade old. They were really pushy, threatening jail time if payment wasn’t made in an hour. There’s no way HMRC would jump straight to threats like that without going through the proper legal channels first, which take ages. Luckily, my client checked with me before giving any card info. Got a call from some right dodgy lot today claiming to be from HMRC. I rang up the actual HMRC to check and turns out it's a scam. You really should report these calls to the police on 101. They’re surprisingly convincing and I reckon a few folks might get caught out by them. Sometimes they even sound threatening, talking about arrests, massive fines and prison time. We need to get the word out and stop them quick! Make sure to warn everyone you can.

This has all the signs of a premium rate callback rip-off. The tax office usually sends you a bunch of letters first before they even think about phoning, and even then, it’s normally a real person speaking, not some recorded message. Gov departments are more about piling on the paperwork and then jumping straight to legal stuff instead of mysterious calls.
