Got a call from an Indian bloke named Payrick claiming to be from Capital Advice Bureau, and he already knew my full name, said I owed money. I told him with GDPR rules, he shouldn’t have any of my details. Then he just cut me off.

I reckon this is nothing but a con. The woman claimed she worked for a credit agency, although I couldn't quite catch which one. She inquired about any loans or credit cards I had hanging over me. When I replied that I had none, she accused me of being dishonest! In the end, I told her to send me a written correspondence if there were any debts owed. Instead of taking the hint, she insisted she was trying to assist me. Assist me with what exactly? I’ve got zero debts!

By October 2016, the number had changed to 0203 129 9359. It’s the same automated voice, sounding American or Filipino, warning that if you don’t ring back, “action” will be taken. Got a call from Heather Gray at HMRC on 0203 129 1027. The message was recorded, telling me I have to call back and not to ignore it. Seems odd, as HMRC probably wouldn’t start with a recorded call, plus it didn’t say who it was for. Didn’t bother ringing back, seems like a scam to me.

Got a call from them on Saturday with a pre-recorded message, then another one on Monday. When I rang back, some bloke started going on about a bunch of tax fraud stuff I'd supposedly done from 2012 to 2014. I started to argue, and he ended up threatening to get the cops to arrest me and seize my property and credit cards.

I used to be with HMRC and they'd never just ring you up unexpectedly like that. Everything about unpaid taxes or bills comes through the post, not by random calls. If you get a call like that, best not to pick up and tell the tax office or the police straight away.

I just want to echo what others have said since May 10th, I've had the same experience with my elderly mum, who’s 74, getting bombarded with calls over several days. They leave voicemails threatening legal trouble if she doesn’t ring back. It’s obviously a scam, especially since I deal with the tax office regularly and this isn’t their style at all. If you’re worried or feel under pressure, ask them to send everything in writing and don’t engage with them. Honestly, these types of calls ought to be banned completely.
