I told them straight away to take me off their list because they had the wrong details. Then they went on asking if I owned the house privately. I got a call from someone claiming I’d previously talked to a Danny Smith at the council about repairs on a council flat. Thing is, I don’t even live in a council property. When I asked how they’d got my number, they just said it came from some database. I told them I wasn’t comfortable with the call because it seemed a bit dodgy. Got a missed call from this number. A while back I did pick up when a woman called saying that because of Covid there might be some delays with my housing, asking if I needed any repairs done. I said no! But ever since then I’ve been getting emails about repairs... watch out and don’t give away your address. They’ll ask to verify your name for sure, but never share your date of birth. Better yet, ask them to prove who your housing provider or council is first.

Find the section for ‘report phishing attempt’ and carefully read all the info before you fill out the form. Don’t forget to include any links or website addresses you got. I got a call from someone saying they’re from the Emission Team. Apparently, they’re dealing with cars and vans that had that cheat device fitted by Mercedes between 2008 and 2019. If your vehicle had it, you could be eligible to claim quite a bit of money - up to 10 grand! They even said you’d still qualify for compensation for all the extra expenses during the time the car was registered to you, even if you don't own it anymore. Seems worth checking out if you think your car might have been involved.

Got a call from some scammer claiming to have a special broadband offer for me - instantly fishy since they mixed up my actual provider. Then they started backing off when I called them out. Proper dodgy.

I’m pretty sure it isn’t a scam, it’s something from the Emissions Team about a bunch of Mercedes cars that had this thing called a defeat device. Basically, it was used to fool emissions tests and reduce pollution numbers. But fixing it was super pricey, so if you owned a Mercedes made between 2009 and 2019 you might be able to get some compensation.

I usually ignore calls from numbers I don’t recognise because they mostly turn out to be scams. My phone even flags some calls as possible fraud or suspected scams. I’ve blocked more numbers than I actually have saved in contacts. Since these calls seem to be from random computer-generated numbers, the real problem is companies selling our info to scammers. If they banned selling those lists, the scammers would have nowhere to go. Loads of folks still fall for these and lose loads of money. This really needs to be put an end to.

Some woman rang saying she was from money expert, trying to help me save on my car finance. She phoned again the next day asking for my info. I didn’t give her any personal stuff, gave her a fake email instead. Later I got an email from a random gmail called 'plevin' asking me to sign and send back forms about house repairs. Totally a SCAM. I blocked her straight away!

Got a call from some car finance dodgers who said they were based in Chester. When I asked more, they suddenly turned into some outfit calling themselves Moneyexpert.com. I kept them chatting for about an hour, throwing in loads of Batman stuff - asked for HP details for my Batmobile (a proper classic!). Told them I'd ask Alfred to get me an email address since I didn’t actually have one. Proper waste of their time!
