Got a call from someone saying they were HMRC, telling me I had a tax issue and a case was going to be filed. The guy’s voice was this really dull, serious bloke, insisting I call back on a 0201 number. At the end, he warned me in a scary way, “DO NOT IGNORE.” No chance I’m going to ring that number.

I recently received a phone call from this number. The bloke on the line claimed he was reaching out regarding a car accident I supposedly had last year - which, might I add, I never experienced. I decided to humour him and pretended I’d already received compensation for the damage. He kept insisting I was in line for some personal compensation. When I prompted him for specific details about the accident to verify his legitimacy, he failed to provide any information. Despite my repeated requests, he asserted that he had all the information readily available but couldn’t share it with me for “security purposes.” He then asked me to share the accident details, which I fabricated, and to my surprise, he confirmed that my made-up story was correct! Absolutely delighted to play along with these callers. A ten-minute call to someone in India? Worth every bit of my time!

Received a call purporting to be from an accident assistance service. The individual on the other end had an Indian accent. Got a call on our landline from 0201 818 9956. A bloke called Mohamed keeps trying the same scam. He said he was a solicitor ringing about an accident, but when my wife said we hadn’t been in one, he quickly switched to a “minor bump” story. Then he just hung up. Honestly, phone companies really need to crack down on this nonsense and disconnect these numbers. Next time, I’m going to use a trick I heard years ago in Hong Kong - answer with “No, this isn’t Mr ?, this is the ??? Public Mortuary.” It always made them hang up straight away.
