In the past week and a half, I've had two calls from the same number. My phone showed the code as Telford, but judging by what others have said here, that's probably not accurate. Both times, a polite lady with a British accent rang me up. She claimed to be from EE and said they could cut down my bills for broadband or mobile. After the second call, I got in touch with EE directly. They confirmed to me that this number is linked to a SCAM. For context, I’m based in Devon.

The caller hung up when answered; hence, it was an automatic call, seeing if someone would pick up. If your number is shortlisted for a follow-up call, this time by a real person, and you answer it, you will be in danger of being scammed by a professional scammer with a fake, convincing story of why you should do as they ask. Therefore, a loss of money from your bank account is most likely - WARNING - If anyone wants to talk to you, they will leave a message. Ensure your answering machine is working, and you will never miss a genuine call. For any calls you don't know, never answer them or call them back. If you are unsure, ask family members for help - SCAMMERS are looking for vulnerable people/victims. You don't know who is calling you and you do not recognise the number; DON'T ANSWER IT. If it's a genuine caller, they will leave a message on your answering machine with their details. If you don't recognise their details, phone a friend or family member to seek help.

Some dodgy scammer called me, asked for my name so I gave them a made-up one. They said it sounded correct at first, which was a laugh. I could almost hear the panic kick in when they found out my name wasn’t Jeremy and their whole trick didn’t work out. Proper funny moment!

I had a weird call, sounded dodgy to me. At first, the caller said it was about my phone contract but then they had no clue who my provider was. Then they said it was about my tariff, and after that, they claimed to be from plan.com. Couldn't tell me how they found my number or why they were ringing me out of the blue like that, which I'm pretty sure breaks GDPR rules. Ended up just hanging up and blocking the number straight away.

Total scam - this person wouldn’t stop saying they could get me a better phone deal. I almost got convinced since my contract had just ended. I asked where they’d got my number from, and they said some third party and also that my number was public since I run a small business. When I kept pressing them to say if my number was on their own list, they just hung up on me after I asked like 4 times while they kept firing questions at me. Remember, you’re allowed to ask a company to delete any info they have on you. Definitely block this number.

A couple of comments down share some ways to help put an end to these scams and explain why simply blocking numbers might not do much. It doesn’t take any longer to report a call than it does to leave a comment here. While it’s unlikely things will change overnight, the police aren’t fully aware of just how widespread this fraud is or the newest tricks scammers are trying out. If everyone who keeps getting these annoying calls and messages doesn’t report them and complain to their local MP, nothing will really happen to stop these low-life crooks.

I’ve got no clue about the person who rang me, as I can’t actually take calls - my phone's configured solely for texts. I picked up the phone, and it turned out to be a call from the energy hub. They started chatting about boilers and mentioned that I hadn't registered yet. To be honest, I'm baffled as to why they reached out to me, considering I'm not the tenant here; my mother-in-law is. I can't quite tell if it's a scam or not, so just a heads-up. As soon as I mentioned I wasn't the homeowner or tenant, they thanked me for my time and promptly ended the call. Quite peculiar, really!

I received a call from this number earlier while I was in the middle of a conversation with a mate, so I just let it ring through to voicemail. Strangely, the caller chose not to leave a message, and I can’t seem to find any details about who this number is registered to.

I found it quite challenging to follow what the woman was chatting about, but it appeared I might qualify for some sort of boiler grant. I didn't stick around for long and hung up. It all felt rather dodgy, if I'm honest.
