I've just tried what we talked about, and it turns out the number isn't coming up as valid. How on earth could that be?

It certainly felt like a scam call to me. The person on the other end was exceptionally brusque and took on an air of superiority. As soon as I challenged him, he simply disconnected the call. My advice is to disregard anything they tell you about alleged issues with your computer or software; it’s far wiser to consult a local professional. They didn’t even seem to know the homeowner's name, let alone get the address right!
