Brand Preferences called again today. They wanted me to verify my name, address and phone number, which they read out - but every detail they gave was wrong, even the number they called from. I just said it was right because I didn’t want to give out my real info. I kept asking for their company details including a contact number - they said they’d give it after I answered some questions like what car I drive and if I had PPI, the usual stuff. The call ended with a recorded message that did give a number and some info, but it was spoken so fast it was almost impossible to catch.

I’ve had calls from this number a few times over the last week. The first two times there was just silence on the other end, sounded automated, so I just ended the call. Got a call this evening around 8pm from someone asking for a person I’d never come across before. I told him they don’t live here, but he insisted he needed my surname to move on. I told him maybe he could begin by telling me who he was. He said he was from some firm called Brand Comparison or something like that. Got a call out of the blue from someone trying to switch my phone service to BT. Told them I wasn’t interested and ended the call. Just a couple of minutes later, another call from a different person came through, saying I clearly didn’t get the deal and they were trying to help me save some money. I made it very clear I wasn’t interested and hung up again. Then the same bloke rang back within a few minutes, insisting I should hear him out because it was a ‘no obligation’ offer and he could save me cash. I told him that three calls in under 10 minutes felt more like harassment than a polite offer, and that I’d be reporting this to Ofcom and BT. He went oddly quiet when I asked his name, then just ended the call. Honestly, I’ve never had a cold caller so rude and pushy, like they think they know what’s best for me and I’m daft for refusing.

I find the Telephone Preference Service to be utterly ineffective. It seems these persistent callers are able to flourish in the UK regardless of their dubious reputations online. The moment you confront them, they simply disconnect and then seem to take it upon themselves to continue bombarding you with calls, all while ignoring your requests. It’s high time we write to our Members of Parliament and demand that the TPS be overhauled or replaced with an agency that possesses genuine power to intervene. Only then will signing up with the TPS truly make a difference.

If you’ve ever done a survey or signed up for anything online, that’s probably how your number got out there. There’s usually a tick box somewhere asking if you consent to your info being shared or sold. Just being ex-directory means your number’s not in the phone book, but doesn’t magically stop it from getting passed around. It’s not rocket science, mate.
