When I answered, it was quiet for a moment, then a woman said she was calling from Brand Preferences. I quickly told her no thanks since I've already had four cold calls today.

Brand Preferences called again today. They wanted me to verify my name, address and phone number, which they read out - but every detail they gave was wrong, even the number they called from. I just said it was right because I didn’t want to give out my real info. I kept asking for their company details including a contact number - they said they’d give it after I answered some questions like what car I drive and if I had PPI, the usual stuff. The call ended with a recorded message that did give a number and some info, but it was spoken so fast it was almost impossible to catch.

Likely a dodgy number - I received a call from this one, but as soon as I picked up, they hung up. What’s more, my number is ex-directory, so it’s rather suspicious. After dialling 1471, I got a recorded message stating that this number had been cut off due to suspected fraudulent dealings. However, it’s clearly still active since I just had a call from it. I received a rather odd call this evening around 8 o'clock. The chap on the line was looking for someone with a name utterly foreign to me. I informed him that the individual he was after doesn’t reside at my address. He then insisted that to proceed, he required my surname. I countered by suggesting that it might be wise for him to first reveal who he was. He claimed to represent a company by the name of Brand Comparison or something along those lines. Once again, he pressed on about needing my last name to keep chatting. So, I responded, "In that case, let’s not carry on with this call, shall we?" He promptly cut off the line! Quite suspect, if you ask me.

I find the Telephone Preference Service to be utterly ineffective. It seems these persistent callers are able to flourish in the UK regardless of their dubious reputations online. The moment you confront them, they simply disconnect and then seem to take it upon themselves to continue bombarding you with calls, all while ignoring your requests. It’s high time we write to our Members of Parliament and demand that the TPS be overhauled or replaced with an agency that possesses genuine power to intervene. Only then will signing up with the TPS truly make a difference.

For several months now I keep getting calls from someone looking for a Mr Lapwood. They give me an address that isn't mine and ask about my phone and internet provider. Then they want to know if it's alright for BT to get in touch with me. But the moment I ask who they are, they just hang up.
