I answered but there was nothing on the line, so I just ended the call.

Answered the phone and they just hung up on me.

I never just cut off the call. instead, I set the phone next to the radio playing BBC Radio 4 and let it ring on for ages. While they’re hooked up to my line, they can’t ring other people. Since doing this, the fake calls have dropped a fair bit compared to before.
