Today my TRUECALL gadget got a call from 01924215367. Before asking me if I wanted to pick up, it first tried to find out who was calling. When the caller stayed silent, my phone never even rang. I got this device mainly because I’ve been caught out by scams and dodgy sales before. BT recommends it, which gave me confidence. What I’ve noticed is that with something like this, (1) scam callers usually give up because they realise I’m not an easy target, and (2) I don’t get as many annoying calls. There are other similar call blockers you can use too. From what I’ve looked into, phone numbers can be bought to look like they’re from the UK, but the call is actually from abroad. Sometimes, the background office noise during calls is just a looped recording. I’ve heard that phone companies can’t actually block calls coming in from other countries.

Got a call from someone claiming to have £1200 I was owed due to bank charges being refunded. The caller was hard to understand, spoke with an Asian accent and already had my full name, DOB, address and even my wife’s name. He tried to confirm which bank I used, wrongly insisting I had an account I don’t tend to use but actually I do have an old NatWest one I’d forgotten about. Then he asked me to hold the card and read out the first 8 digits himself, pushing me to say the final 8 digits aloud as well to “verify” it. He was really persistent, so I kept him chatting for a good 15 minutes before finally telling him no and he hung up. Felt like a scam - what do you reckon he was trying to do?

I’ve been getting nonstop calls from this number, all hours of the day and night. An Asian bloke keeps asking for people who don’t even live here. About two weeks ago, this number popped up and the person claimed I'd paid too much in bank fees - I ended the call straight away, knowing it was dodgy. Today, they called again, this time a guy with an Asian accent saying he was from UK Finance, telling me I’d get a cheque for the overpaid fees. This time I played along and asked some questions. I told him to send the cheque, but he said there's a security check first. I then asked which bank supposedly owed me money. After a pause, he said Halifax. I asked how much I was due; he said it could be anywhere between two or three thousand pounds or just a few hundred. I said that’d be lovely, especially since I don’t even have an account with Halifax. The call quickly ended with him hanging up. Classic scam.

Got a call from this number claiming there’s a cheque waiting for us at our bank. Then they wanted us to confirm the long number on our card, which we refused. After that, they offered to give the first 4 digits of their card - honestly, do they think we’re that daft? Most debit cards from this bank begin with the same digits anyway. Got a call on the 30th of Jan 2014 around 5:50pm from a bloke with an Asian accent. He asked me to say my name and address, which I did. Then he suddenly said, "Tell me your DOB." Cheers for the brilliant site and tips. I’ve had a run-in with these scammers before. Last time, a bloke with an Indian accent called saying he’d sort out a refund from my bank for some overcharge. I told him I wasn’t interested and didn’t want the money, which seemed to annoy him massively - he started shouting, so I just hung up. Then, earlier today (27th Jan at 16:59), I got another call from the same number. The phone only rang about six times before cutting off. I did a 1471 trace and yup, it was those dodgy lot again. I’m ex-directory and signed up with the Telephone Preference Service, but apparently that doesn’t stop these pests.

Spoke to someone with a proper English accent and they wanted to talk to Mrs ........ (which is me). I tried to find out what the call was about but he just kept asking for Mrs ........ without giving a reason. When I asked again why, he snapped at me saying "Who the heck are YOU?" and that’s when I ended the call. Should’ve hung up right away like I normally do!

Saturday morning around 9, the phone rang waking us up - we were still in bed! Wish there was a way to block all these annoying cold callers for good. We probably get two or three calls like that every day. When we ask nicely to be taken off their list, sometimes it works, other times it doesn't. Got a call from a lady with an Indian accent claiming she had to send my husband a cheque from his bank. She tried to get his bank details but when he questioned why she needed that info since she should already have it, she just cut the call. She called a few more times, hanging up each time. Then she rang again, demanding I hand the phone over to my husband immediately, which I wouldn't do. As soon as I started asking her some questions, she ended the call.

The number looks like it’s coming from Wakefield, but it’s actually an international scam call trying to trick you into handing over bank, credit card, or computer info. Never share any personal details with callers who ask for that sort of stuff. The best thing to do is just hang up straight away. Or if they ask for someone, you can say, “Hold on, I’ll get them,” then put the phone down and don’t pick it back up - they’ll quickly get bored and call off. I once got an email claiming to be from Amazon about an order supposedly placed recently, but I hadn’t ordered anything at all. It looked fishy, especially since they spelt “Amazon” with two M’s! When I rang Amazon, they confirmed they always include full item details in any order emails. Don’t trust strange emails or open attachments - just delete them, or forward suspicious ones to [email protected] for them to check out.

I just got a ring from this number, a chap with an Indian accent who said his name was Jamie. He claimed he was mailing me a cheque to reimburse some bank fees. Oddly, he mentioned my home address before I gave him any info. When I asked which firm he was with, he said UK Financial from Eastbourne. The whole thing seemed like a dodgy scam trying to get my details, and he hung up pretty quickly once he’d said that.

My grandad got a call from a lady speaking with an Indian accent, she asked for his name, then quickly said thanks and ended the call. Pretty sure they’ll try ringing again soon. It really worries me how easy older folks can fall for stuff like this. Lucky I was there to warn him not to pick up if that number rings again! These scammers really get on my nerves!

I just checked the feedback about this number and it seems the same guy from India called me too. He claimed he was ringing from some company (didn't hear the exact name) that refunds customers for wrongly charged bank fees. Feeling a bit iffy, I asked which bank he meant. He said Lloyds, but I told him I don’t even have an account there. As soon as I said that, he cut me off straight away. Looks to me like he was trying to scam info like bank or card details. Watch out for this one!

Only recently did I find out you can look up numbers from 1471, and I’m really glad I checked this one out. Honestly, what nerve! I’m definitely ready for them if they try ringing me again…!

Got a call from a fella claiming to be from Microsoft's tech support, saying my Windows PC had been sending them some kind of security alert. Thing is, I don't even own a Windows machine! When I told him that, he quickly turned rude and started barking at me. The whole call felt like it was coming from a big call centre or something. He tried to get me to turn my computer on so he could get into it. Honestly, never ever share any details from your computer with someone on the phone. It's just not worth it.

I got a call from a bloke with an Indian accent claiming he was from UK financial services. He said I was owed money but needed to give my credit card info to get a refund! I told him I knew his voice because he’d tried ringing me a couple of nights before, pretending to be someone else. He denied calling me at all. When I said I’d never heard of UK financial services and questioned him again, he hung up pretty sharpish. So, I phoned UK financial services myself to check if any of their people had contacted me. They said no, definitely not, and mentioned they’ve been getting loads of complaints about this lately. They said I did the right thing by getting in touch directly. These scammers have been ringing me, pretending to be from Microsoft, Smart Guys, and UK financial services. It’s tricky ’cause they use real company names and sound legit. Just watch out, folks!

Got a call earlier at about 11.08 from this number. A lady, sounded like she might have an Indian accent, claimed to be from some UK financial company. She told me there was a refund cheque waiting for me due to overpaid bank fees. She even knew my name and address right, but then asked for my date of birth and which bank I’d be depositing the cheque into. I told her that was none of her concern. She just said thanks and disconnected. Seriously, who are these lot? I feel really sorry for older folks who could get tricked by such calls...

This number rang me earlier tonight, and the bloke on the line had a really odd accent. He claimed to be from some UK financial company, saying a bank supposedly owed me £1,200 and that he was set to dispatch a cheque. He knew my name and where I lived but asked for my birth date to confirm things. I ended the call. Then he rang again, insisting the cash was due to overpaid fees, mentioned the bank’s name which actually sounded legit, and said he even had the account number. Still, I just hung up.

So this afternoon round 2:15 I got a call from some bloke who sounded like he was from Asia. He started with "Hello, I'm calling from ======," but I had no clue what that was. Then he went on about my computer having serious errors. I just burst out laughing, asked him how on earth he could know about my computer through a phone call, told him he was daft, and he hung up straight away. Wonder if he’ll try ringing again. Classic SCAM, as usual!

Got a call from this number earlier about some bank charge refund. The guy, sounded Indian, already had my name and address. When he asked me to confirm my birth date to sort the refund, I refused and asked where he was calling from. Then he just ended the call straight away. I reported it to Action Fraud and they were pretty supportive.

On the morning of 21st December 2013 around 9:45, I received a call from this number (got it from 1471). When I tried ringing back myself, it wouldn’t go through, but if I used the automated callback which charges a fee, it worked and I heard noises like pages being flipped - something like what eBay does. I only tried returning the call because I guessed it could’ve been an eBay seller trying to arrange for me to pick something up. Feels like some telco might be in on this scam somehow, but who exactly are they?

I asked loads about their supposed UK finance group, then the polite Indian guy suddenly cut me off. bit disappointing, i was curious to see where it was going. should i report this to anyone?
