Occasionally, the silence on the other end feels like a call centre, and other times, there's a faint noise just before we respond, only for the caller to hang up immediately. It's quite peculiar and does raise suspicions that it might be some sort of scam designed to lure us into calling them back. Interestingly, the numbers aren't even withheld.

Even though I've opted out of the telephone directory and registered with the Telephone Preference Service, it seems that no matter what steps I take, these persistent callers refuse to stop. Is there an authority or organisation to whom I could escalate this issue?

I've been receiving these irritating calls followed by a message saying "the other participant has ended the call." Frustratingly, I'm unable to return their call to let them know exactly how I feel, so I've gone ahead and filed a complaint with Ofcom. I really urge others to take a moment and submit complaints as well, since it seems to be one of the few ways to tackle these bothersome nuisances. I just received a rather curious phone call from this number on the 29th of September, 2014 at precisely 10:20 in the morning. The caller addressed me by name, asserting they were from Apple North East, a company which deals with windows and such. A few years back, we did have some windows fitted by them, but since then, I've fielded a few rather dubious calls. One memorable instance was last year; I had quite the run-in with a former manager who had somehow retained my contact details after leaving the company, which resulted in a rather irate exchange. Today's conversation was different, though. This new caller, claiming affiliation with Apple, expressed a desire to pop round tomorrow. However, he wasn’t too persistent when I turned him down. Now, I find myself pondering whether this was truly Apple reaching out or perhaps some other entity masquerading under their name. Regardless, the next time I need any window work done, I shall be contacting Apple directly through the official number available on their website.

Last year I kept getting calls from this number, it was Safestyle Windows. They would ring me nearly every week asking for me by my name. I got pretty fed up and told the guy on the line to take my unlisted number off their records, but he flat out refused.

A few days ago, they called again. I didn’t catch the caller’s name, just caught "replacement windows" and quickly said “not interested” then hung up. Just twenty minutes ago, the same irritating bloke called me again. I instantly recognised his voice from last year. Once he said “replacement windows” I just told him to “get lost” and slammed the phone down.

It’s clear they still haven’t removed my unlisted number from their system, and honestly, it’s driving me mad now.

I think this company handles conservatories, windows, and door fitting. Over the past couple of years, they’ve been calling me quite a lot. They usually ring in clusters - sometimes 5 or 6 times during a single week, even twice on the same day occasionally - then they go silent for weeks at a time. I don’t want any more jobs done, so the calls are getting a bit annoying. Although I’m signed up with the TPS, since they’ve actually done work for me which is still covered by guarantee, blocking their number might backfire if there’s ever an issue with my windows or door. The job was well done and FENSA approved, but certainly on the pricey side. I try to stay polite but honestly, they’re starting to wear me down!
