Yesterday my wife got a phone call from a woman with an Indian accent claiming to be from BT, saying there was a problem with our phone line and asking her to check her computer. It’s quite a coincidence since Openreach have already been here twice and are scheduled to come back today to fix our slow internet and frequent disconnections. Whenever I’ve called EE, they’ve always been helpful and I’ve always dealt with someone based in the UK. Luckily, my wife knows about these types of scams and told the caller she’d need to speak to me instead.

I received a few calls from this number, purportedly from BT. They rang me thrice and then had the audacity to accuse me of not being truthful.

Received a call purportedly from the BT engineering team, alleging there was a security problem with my internet. When I requested to verify his credentials by asking for my account number, he was stumped and promptly hung up. Definitely dodgy!

I said I wasn’t having any of it and promptly hung up. Just to be safe, I checked on Bitdefender, and everything’s secure on our end. At 75, I'm not so easily fooled, thanks very much. It's highly unlikely BT would reach out like that anyway!

Deception with a touch of absurdity. My elderly mother-in-law, who’s 95, received a call from someone purporting to be from BT Technical Support. They insisted there was an issue with her broadband and asked her to hop onto her computer for some guidance. Quite hilarious considering she doesn’t actually own a computer or have a broadband service!
