I received a call that was allegedly from the Durham police, but when I attempted to call them back, I found it impossible. So, I dialled 101 to inquire further about this unexpected call. The operator informed me that no such attempt to reach me had been made. Interestingly, she mentioned that if it were genuine, a voicemail would have been left. Quite baffling, really!

Definitely Durham Police calling here. It’s not only the witness care team, but any calls they make out go through as unknown numbers at first. However, if they add the 666 prefix to the number being dialled, then it shows up as this particular number on your phone. This is because some phones block unknown callers by default. If you accidentally ring 999 and don’t actually need help, the call gets transferred to the police control room. When they ring back, they’ll ask for your details like address, date of birth and so on. This is important, especially if the caller is someone who’s a repeated victim of domestic abuse - even if they say it was a pocket dial or mistake, the police might still do a welfare check in case it was a secret call for help. They don’t store records of outgoing calls in their system but they do keep logs of most incoming calls, and every call is recorded anyway. (Just so you know, this info comes from someone who works there.)

Initially, it was the Durham police who reached out to me, and they claimed there was no record of any communication. However, once I mentioned the name of the officer handling the vehicle accident, their story changed. Clearly, it was a legitimate call and not some sort of sales pitch or anything like that.

It certainly wasn’t the Durham Police that rang, as they wouldn’t be calling at such a ridiculous hour unless it was absolutely necessary, and they’d have the decency to either speak or leave a voicemail. It’s absolutely appalling how companies are able to share your information so casually, resulting in persistent nuisance calls. Imagine receiving a phone call at 1:20 in the morning from an unknown number; it’s unsettling enough. Those calls so early in the morning trigger thoughts of family crises or something equally distressing, compelling you to pick up the phone. I mean, who in their right mind thinks it's appropriate to disturb someone in the dead of night? Oh, right-it's just another ploy to sell you PPI! And as if that wasn’t bad enough, I got another call from the same number at 3:48am, waking our poor 16-month-old daughter in the process. Just what you need when you have to be up for work in the morning-massive thanks to this telemarketing nonsense!

I got a ring at 1.20am from a number I didn’t recognise, which is bad enough on its own. At that hour, you automatically worry it’s some kind of emergency involving family or something serious, so I had to pick up. I mean, who calls someone in the dead of night otherwise? Oh right, to try and get you to claim PPI! Then, to make matters worse, this same number phoned again at 3.48am, waking up our 16 month old baby both times - which is dreadful especially when you’ve got work the next day. Proper thanks for that, telemarketing rubbish!
