I got a call from someone saying they were from HMRC’s legal team, the standard routine really. Felt a bit sorry for the caller who didn’t speak English well and insisted they were with the legal department in London. Thing is, in Scotland and Northern Ireland, these cases go through regional offices. Right from the start, the person didn’t even know my name or where I lived but was sure I had some legal problem with my tax. They even said sorry for wasting their time calling random people - some of whom might have been involved in fraud investigations!
