I can't be certain whether it's an irritating caller or not, so I’ve decided not to pick up. I've got an answering machine for that very reason - if it's something of significance, they'll surely leave a message.

Earlier today, I received a couple of rather dubious calls. A pre-recorded voice, sounding distinctly feminine, informed me that my internet connection was at risk of being cut off within the next day unless I pressed 1 to receive further assistance in preventing such a disaster. Naturally, I refrained from pressing any buttons and simply hung up the landline. This certainly doesn’t seem like the protocol BT would follow, my internet service provider. I’ve also come across the suggestion that pressing 1 could potentially share my personal information with the caller. Quite the alarming situation, I reckon!
