Got a call from someone saying they were from my bank about my Visa/Mastercard. It was an automated voice telling me that £600 had just been moved out of my account around 15 minutes earlier and to get in touch with them straight away.

Some bloke phoned saying he was from Sky, claiming my internet was running slow. He asked me to get on my laptop but I wasn't having it. When I pressed him, he gave me an address in London, which turned out to be a BT one. It was clear he knew I used Sky, which was a bit unsettling. It was obvious a scam to me. I told him I'd ring up Sky direct to sort it out, and he tried to give me a number himself - bit sneaky. Didn’t let him give me that number, obviously.

I got calls from abroad on 7 Jan 2020 and again on 18 Dec 2019. It was a woman speaking with an accent I couldn’t quite place. The first time in December she rang, she didn’t bother leaving any voicemail. But when she called back in January, she left a message saying something about changing my boiler.

This number keeps popping up in loads of scam calls. If more people who got these calls actually reported it to Action Fraud, the police might have cracked down on it already. It’s still not too late though. Just search for 'action fraud', find the site ending in 'police.uk', then hit the 'reporting' section and file the phishing complaint. Honestly, that’s the best way to put a stop to these scams for good.

It was quite evident that the call came from an overseas call centre, especially considering the pronounced Asian accent of the person on the line. It seems they managed to route their call through a British landline number. The caller turned incredibly impolite when I consistently responded with "NO" to her inquiries.

Then he pushed me to verify the account name, starting with letters matching my grandad’s, who’s been gone years. When I challenged why he knew that, he snapped and just cut me off. This was definitely a scam, not a real number at all. If anyone else gets one of these dodgy calls and actually wants to put a stop to it, you should really report it to the cops. Just Google ‘action fraud’, then head to the ‘police.uk’ website, hit the ‘reporting’ section and make sure you submit the phishing scam info.

If you get a couple of random calls from an Asian number and they ask for you by name, it's pretty likely it’s a bit dodgy. What I do is tell them the name they want isn’t anyone around here, like “There’s no one by that name at this number.” Then I throw them off by saying I’m calling from somewhere totally unexpected, like a local gardening club or something random. They usually get lost and don’t know how to respond because you don’t play along with their usual lines. It’s strange but it really unsettles them. Cheers, PP.
