Got a call from someone saying they were HMRC and that I had some sort of fraud warrant out on me. They told me to press 1 to talk to an officer to sort things out and pay my taxes right away. I didn’t fall for it and blocked the number instantly!

Got a text from someone claiming to be HMRC saying I had a tax refund waiting. Just so you know, HMRC never sends texts about refunds, so this is definitely a scam. Watch out!

I got a voicemail from a woman’s voice saying I was being investigated by HMRC for dodging taxes and to ring back on a mobile number. When I called, it ended up being some Asian call centre that was just trying to scam me.

Heads up! Someone called me claiming I was caught up in tax fraud and warned that if I didn’t hit 1, I'd have a warrant issued and get arrested soon.

Got a call from what sounded like a UK firm, but it was actually some call centre from India. They were pretending to be from places like BT, HMRC, or British Gas and tried really hard to trick me into handing over my card info. Don’t trust it if they say they’re from any of those companies - they just want your card details at the end of the day!

Dodgy call! They said I'd filed fake tax returns and told me to hit 1 to chat to someone. If I didn’t, they threatened I'd get arrested with a summons. Total scam!

Got an automated call claiming to be from HMRC, warning about supposed penalties. Total scam! Ignored the option to press 1 and just ended the call. Make sure to block the number straight away.

Make sure you report every one of these calls to Action Fraud through their phishing report page. They ask you to give detailed info for the NFIB too, so don’t skip that part. You should also let others know about it here on this site. Unfortunately, these scams do catch people out, especially the elderly or more vulnerable, and the scammers end up making money from them. This is really the only way to try and put an end to it.

Got a robocall claiming they're from HMRC saying I've been linked to some TAX FRAUD and to press 1 to speak with the department handling it.

It was quite alarming to get a voicemail warning me of terrible consequences if I didn’t call back, especially since it’s happened to me twice now. The first time I actually believed them when they said I had to cough up £2,000 right away or face arrest within hours. They even said I’d have to find someone to care for my kids or they’d be taken away. It really messes with you when you’re feeling vulnerable. I only started to get suspicious when they mentioned some different account I had to pay into directly. Honestly, I felt so silly for falling for it.

I rang this number back and a man with a thick Indian accent, who said his name was Jones Smith, claimed to be handling my case. He kept going in circles about what the case was actually about. After asking him a few times for details, he got quite hostile and ended the call, telling me to call back when I “learned to keep quiet.” He was really rude. I tried calling twice more, and a different person answered both times, saying that Jones Smith was my case worker and that he’d ring me back - but that never happened. Honestly, I’m pretty sure Jones Smith isn’t even his real name!

Got a call earlier from someone saying they were with HMRC, then they told me to press 1 to talk to an officer. The person on the other end tried to get me to verify my personal details. Absolutely no chance I was giving anything away! Blocked them straight away.

I was resting in bed after my chemo when I got a voicemail from some American lady claiming to be from HMRC. She warned me to call back or face some kind of serious trouble, then ended with "take care." Honestly, I’m not about to call them - I have enough on my plate right now without unnecessary hassle. If you get a call from 01723 282076, which apparently is a Scarborough number, don’t bother ringing back. It’s not worth the stress.
