Got a call from someone claiming to be with BT, said there was a problem with my payment info because of some faults. I told them I don't have an account with BT. The caller was an Indian guy but used a very typical British name. Bit fishy if you ask me.

I got a call from someone claiming to be BT, but they had a heavy Indian accent and used a very English-sounding name to hide it. I actually switched my phone provider from BT to someone else like three years back. When the caller said they were from BT, I told them my number was ex-directory and that I didn’t want any calls from them, asking them to delete my details from whatever list they had.

Today, at about 1:08pm on the 1st March 2022, I got a call from 01709889223. The bloke on the phone said he was from BT Outbound and wanted to talk about my phone line. He sounded Indian, was middle-aged, and gave the name John Martin. I’m ex-directory and my number’s on the Telephone Preference Service, so I don’t usually get sales calls or junk phone calls. When I looked up the number, it showed as an Indian number based out of Rotherham. Apparently, it’s quite common for Indian firms to buy loads of UK local numbers. I have a mate who runs a marketing company in India and they buy thousands of UK numbers every month to push adverts on Facebook and Instagram. They also use VPNs to make it look like the calls are coming from nearby locations, like where the number is registered. So don’t be fooled - the 01709889223 number isn’t really from Rotherham or British Telecom. It’s likely a scam number pretending to be BT to trick people. The best thing to do is tell them to take you off their call list, since they’re not allowed to keep calling you if you’re on the TPS. If they call again, you can report them to the telecom authority or the TPS itself. Cheers, Ljay (ninjascambuster)

I got a call from some bloke claiming to be from BT, but honestly, my phone’s with SKY, not BT. It was an Indian guy on the line. Quite funny really!

Got a call from some bloke claiming to be from BT trying to flog me services, even though I’m already with Plusnet! Quite the cheeky move! :)

Got a call from a guy claiming to be from BT, but I ain’t even signed up with them. The bloke sounded Indian. When I checked the number on Google, it says it was linked to BT back in 1994 and from around Rotherham. But then, digging a bit deeper, it also popped up as a number recently snapped up and used in Prakesh, India! Bit odd, innit?

I got a call from someone claiming to be from British Telecom, said his name was something like John Martin or Martine, which honestly sounds like one of those cheesy tricks scammers use, picking fancy two-part names. The guy definitely wasn’t from the UK, sounded more like a middle-aged guy with an Indian accent. Plus, we’re ex-directory, so we shouldn’t be getting any unwanted calls like that anyway. Definitely felt dodgy to me.
