Got a call from someone claiming to be with BT, said there was a problem with my payment info because of some faults. I told them I don't have an account with BT. The caller was an Indian guy but used a very typical British name. Bit fishy if you ask me.

I received a call claiming to be from BT, but the accent of the caller was distinctly Indian, and they passed off a British name which felt a bit dodgy to me. I switched my service from BT to another provider roughly three years back. I let them know I’m ex-directory, so their call was uninvited. I told them firmly to erase my details from their records!

Today, I received a call from 01709889223 at 13:08 on the 1st of March, 2022. The individual on the other end, claiming to be from BT OUTBOUND, introduced himself as John Martin; he was a middle-aged man with an Indian accent. It's worth noting that I am ex-directory, and my number is registered with the Telephone Preference Service to prevent sales and nuisance calls. After digging a bit, I discovered that this number appears to originate from India and is tagged as being associated with Rotherham. It’s become quite common for Indian marketing firms to acquire UK local numbers in bulk. In fact, a friend of mine runs a marketing agency in India and buys upwards of 1,000 UK numbers monthly, primarily for Facebook and Instagram campaigns. They cleverly route these calls through VPNs to disguise their actual location, making it seem like they’re calling from closer to the local area. Thus, this 01709889223 number is neither genuinely from Rotherham nor above board; it's just a tool for scamming unwitting individuals into believing they're engaging with a representative from British Telecom. The best course of action when these types of calls come in is to request removal from their outbound list, seeing as it's against the law to spam call someone already registered with the Telephone Preference Service. Should you continue receiving calls after that, I recommend reporting them to the telecommunications watchdog or the TPS! Take care, Ljay (ninjascambuster)

Received a call from someone masquerading as BT, sounded to be an Indian chap. Just to clarify, my phone service is actually with SKY, not BT... what a laugh!

An individual of Indian descent is masquerading as a BT representative, attempting to peddle their services, despite the fact that I’m actually signed up with Plusnet. Quite amusing, isn't it? 😊

Received a call claiming to be from BT, but I’m not even a customer of theirs! The chap on the other end had an Indian accent. A quick search revealed that the number has been associated with BT since 1994 and is linked to a Rotherham area code. However, when you dig a little deeper, it turns out it’s recently acquired and being used out of Prakesh, India! Quite the conundrum, isn't it?

It seems I've had the misfortune of encountering a potential scam artist on the other end of the line. They claimed to be calling from BT or British Telecom, and the name they gave was John Martin-or was it John Martine? Quite the playbook these fraudsters have, opting for those double-barrelled first names to dupe unsuspecting folks. Regardless, it was clear that the caller wasn’t from these parts; the accent was unmistakably that of a middle-aged chap from India. Given that we’re ex-directory, we really shouldn’t be receiving any unwanted calls like this. Quite concerning, to say the least!
