Since I was working from home, I realised that an uptick in internet traffic might be a factor, so I decided to engage with the caller. They instructed me to type ‘eventvwr’ into the search bar after hitting the Windows key and R at the same time. When I started to question whether the call was genuine, the caller began to get rather loud. He insisted that genuine hackers wouldn’t contact the account holder directly and that’s why BT Open Reach was ‘keeping an eye’ on my data usage. However, as I wasn't the one named on the bill, he insisted he needed to talk to the account holder immediately. To reset my security key, he mentioned there would be a £2 fee. When I refused to pass the phone to anyone, his attitude escalated even more. I told him I’d match his tone if he continued, which led him to promptly terminate the call. Curious, I dialled the number again and ended up speaking to someone in Orpington, who mentioned they’d also had numerous calls about this phone number being linked to scams.
