3 yearsToday I got a ring from 01689 814727, and the person said they were from BT Open Reach in Maidenhead. They told me my internet had been compromised somehow. Since I was working online from home, I figured the spike in usage made sense, so I kept listening to what they were saying. They wanted me to hit the windows key plus R, then type in eventvwr in the search box. When I started to question if this was legit, the caller’s tone got a bit harsher. He told me hackers wouldn’t phone me directly and that BT Open Reach was keeping an eye on the network traffic. Because I’m not the person paying the bills, he said he needed to talk to them immediately. Then he claimed I had to pay £2 to reset some sort of security key. I didn’t give in or pass the phone over, and he got even more aggressive with his voice. I warned him not to speak to me like that or I’d respond likewise. That’s when he just cut the call.
