I just had a rather dodgy phone call from someone claiming to be from BT, insisting that there was some illicit activity occurring on my internet connection. They wanted me to hop on my computer so they could guide me through securing my system. Naturally, I asked for a callback number in case I needed to reach out again, and they provided me with this rather suspect number - 02016281 - which I later discovered is nonexistent. So, I did a 1471 and found the number I'm now trying to track down. Could there be a chance that this was a legitimate call, or should I be concerned?

A chap rang me up claiming he was from BT, insisting that someone was misusing my internet connection in a dubious manner. He wanted me to hop on my computer so they could guide me through some security measures to put a stop to it. When I asked for a callback number, they provided me with 02016281, which turned out to be nonexistent. So, I dialled 1471 to get the number I’m actually looking into. Could this be a scam or something?
