i got a voicemail supposedly from bt saying my line was being used illegally and it would be cut off in a day unless i pressed 1 to talk to a tech support person. sounded a bit dodgy to me.

Sounds like one of those scam calls, maybe connected to that TalkTalk data breach. A robotic voice kept saying stuff like, “this is Ofcom’s tech team. We’ve found a problem with your system and your line will be disconnected in 24 hours. If you’re a BT customer, press 1; if not, press 2.” Honestly, best bet is to not press any buttons at all - either hang up straight away or just put the phone down.
