2 yearsAbsolutely a scam, watch out! They claim to be from Virgin Media and say your computer is infected with a virus that's slowing it down. Then they ask you for the colour of the light on your router and to open the Run box by pressing Windows + R, telling you to type "eventvwr". They say this shows hacking attempts but it’s just normal system errors. After that, they get you to go to sites like https://kodv.info for remote access, and once you allow it, they can grab all your personal info, make a fake registration, and demand payment. They might even raid your bank accounts or PayPal if your passwords are stored. Worse still, they can copy your SIM card, so two-factor authentication won’t save you. Best thing to do is hang up immediately, or mess with them by saying you’ve caught them red-handed sitting in a Manchester call centre scamming people all over the country. These fraudsters often have a team and may actually be based in the Middle East, using a Manchester number to trick folks with a local UK landline ID. It’s shocking that this kind of fraud still goes on here!Virgin MediaManchesterUKMiddle East3 yearsI received a rather dubious call from someone with a thick Asian accent, purporting to be from Microsoft. They insisted that my laptop had been compromised by hackers. When I nonchalantly mentioned that I didn’t possess a computer (a wee white lie), they proceeded to inquire about other gadgets like my phone and tablet. It dawned on me that Microsoft typically deals with Windows on computers, not on other devices. When I requested that they send the details to my email, they abruptly disconnected the call. I find it thoroughly amusing to toy with these types of callers!MicrosoftSubmit Your Own Report (0161 964 8826)
