Received a call that was quite unnerving-an automated voice, very robotic, speaking with an American accent, purporting to be from HMRC. They were making rather alarming threats regarding potential legal actions. I strongly advise against returning the call.

Loads of calls from 0161 lately, all sounding dodgy. No way HMRC would send an automated message like that, definitely a scam.

Got a call about owing £4600 on some supposed tax problem, said it was from HMRC. They gave me just 50 minutes to pay or the amount would jump to £25000 and I'd face 5 years in prison. Even rang them back on an 0345 HMRC number they gave me to check, but now I’m certain it’s a total scam.

Today at 16:08 I got a call from a woman with an American accent saying she was from HMRC. She told me not to ignore the call and to ring her back. I didn't bother returning the call. I’ve blocked the number and told Vodafone about it.

Right from the start, it seemed dodgy - some American accent, using loads of American phrases, and then saying they were from HMRC. They wanted me to ring them back. Has anyone else actually called that number? Watch out, you might get stung with a hefty call charge!

I phoned the number back and straight away some bloke claiming to be from HMRC answered. It was a Pakistani guy too, which made me think, does HMRC actually pick up the phone that fast? Seems fishy to me.

It's obvious these calls are a scam from the start. They're probably trying to catch people who are either too trusting or just don't see it's a total con. If you get caught out by this kind of trick, chances are you'll be an easy target for other scams down the line.

This wasn’t HMRC, just some total scam attempt. Luckily I suspected it beforehand, so I decided to mess around and bog them down for a while. Real HMRC calls usually come from an 0300 number and don’t start bossing you about without explaining why they’re reaching out. If you’re feeling cheeky, you could have some fun stringing them along. Otherwise, just ignore the call and don’t bother answering.

Received a call on my mobile from a rather unsettling number, 01618707200. The voice on the line-an automated one, mind you-mentioned something about needing a solicitor and getting the police involved! Absolutely outrageous! Then, to top it all off, it had the cheek to say "take care!" without even providing a human touch. We decided not to return the call and promptly blocked the number. 😡 - type of caller: Automated voicemail.
