Got a voicemail claiming to be from HMRC, saying I’m being sued. I got in touch with the police through the 101 number - they were really understanding and promised to look into it. I got a call at around 3:58pm from a woman claiming to be from HMRC, saying I had a lawsuit coming my way. She asked me to press 1 to hear more. I just hung up straight away. After that, I tried calling the local police on 101 here in Devon and Cornwall to report it. I kept getting cut off though - rang twice and both times the call just dropped after I’d been waiting about a minute and a half. What a pointless hassle.

Got called by someone claiming to be HMRC. Since I’m already dealing with them, I figured I’d hear them out at first. I kept the call going hoping to catch some legit contact details. They actually gave me a real HMRC phone number to check if they were for real. Honestly, I felt a bit daft for not ending it sooner. I’m usually pretty sharp, but the phone call I got today was seriously convincing - felt like the caller was one of their better operators! It’s clear how easily someone less aware could get tricked, end up handing over their details, bank info, even their National Insurance number. I reported it to HMRC first, who were actually quite helpful, then to Action Fraud, which was a total pain, almost gave up as it felt like chatting to a machine. An asian woman answered when my missus hit 1 and asked what the call was about. When she mentioned they’d been ringing her a lot, the lady claimed HMRC was filing a lawsuit for overdue tax.
