Got a call from a person saying they’re with HMRC, and that I’m facing legal action. They didn’t give a name or any details so how am I suppose to know if it’s meant for me? This number rang my mum, who’s quite old, saying it was HMRC. An automated voice told her to press a key to speak to someone about her ‘case.’ When she pressed it, she got connected to a lady with an Indian accent asking for her address, DoB, and national insurance details. I asked who exactly they were and, in pretty broken English, they said HMRC. I mentioned I know this is a scam going around and then they just cut the call.

Really scary call! They pretend to be from HMRC and say we owe a huge sum and they're suing us. They say something like "we’ve been trying to reach you and it’s urgent we talk ASAP." Then it tells you to press a key to talk to an agent. The whole thing is just a recorded message, and it seems like it’s targeting older people or those who might be easily fooled. I doubt HMRC would ring up out of the blue like this - they usually send letters first. Be careful and don’t fall for this kind of scam!

Got a phone call from someone claiming to be from HMRC, asking me for my NI number and DOB. I wasn’t about to give that info out, so I asked them for a callback number to verify it was legit. They refused, saying they’d send an arrest warrant for unpaid taxes instead. I told them to do their worst, I’d wait all day! Feels like a pretty risky scam that could fool someone less cautious into handing over sensitive details and risking identity theft.
