Got one of those calls again - something about HMRC and a legal case, press 1 to speak to your case officer, that kind of thing. Honestly, it’d be scary as hell for an older person, especially someone not quite all there mentally. And that includes me, to be fair. Nowadays, we’re told to watch what we say or risk getting in trouble, but weirdly, these scammers seem untouchable since they’re probably operating from abroad. Anyone struggling with dementia could easily get fooled by this. It’s pretty upsetting - or as the ex-president might put it, just “SAD!!”.

I don’t get how scammers get hold of legit numbers to make these calls. I just got a voicemail claiming to be from HMRC saying they’re suing me - honestly, it was frightening. It’s obviously a con; HMRC wouldn’t call to threaten legal action through an automated message. But in that moment, it’s easy to panic and respond, which is exactly the trap they set. It’s outrageous behaviour. I’m definitely reporting this to HMRC and I hope the police take strong action against them. They’re just awful.
