I got a call from this number the other night claiming to be from HMRC. They said I had a court case coming up because of unpaid tax. I didn't hang about and just ended the call straight away. It really worries me because there are so many people who might fall for this, especially those who are vulnerable. I’m involved with a charity that supports elderly folks and adults with learning difficulties, so I’m planning to put up a big notice warning people about this scam to try and stop anyone else getting caught out.

I called back this morning and got a bloke with an Indian accent who tried to sound like an automated message but messed up saying HMRC and 'the inland revenue'. When I told him I knew what HMRC meant and asked who he was, he just hung up. Going to report this to Action Fraud as well. Best to just ignore it.

Avoid answering calls from HMRC numbers like 0161 850 5416 - it’s definitely a scam. Identical to what others have experienced. The caller claimed to be from the Inland Revenue, threatening to file a lawsuit against me. I ended the call promptly. The Inland Revenue simply doesn’t operate in this manner. They would only act on an outstanding debt after sending a formal letter and a subsequent reminder. Additionally, any such communication would detail the amounts owed. Since I’ve not received any documentation whatsoever, it’s quite clear this is a deceitful ruse.

Got a call about 10 minutes back from someone claiming to be HMRC, saying I'd got a legal case hanging over me. The bloke sounded like he might have been from China, called himself something like Steve Cooper or something, claimed he was some sort of fraud inspector. Asked for my name but I told him I ain’t giving it unless he explained what was going on. When I said I didn’t buy that he was actually HMRC, he just hung up. Watch out, folks.
