I received a rather unsettling phone call from a lady who didn't seem entirely British. She claimed to represent HM Revenue and Customs, stating that the police would be dispatched to apprehend me for some legal infraction. Clearly, that's a load of nonsense! When I tried to ask her more questions, she became quite uncommunicative and insisted that I call back before abruptly hanging up. I hesitated to return the call, as it had all the hallmarks of a scam and I didn't fancy the idea of potentially racking up a hefty bill, especially with the many dodgy calls I get these days. - Caller: Sounded like some sort of scam, pretending to be from HM Revenue and Customs.

Oh, absolutely! I had a similar experience just the other day. A woman's pre-recorded voice informed me that the HMRC was preparing to initiate some sort of action against me and urged me to hit 1 to connect with a case officer. Naturally, I didn’t entertain the idea. I mean, really, does anyone believe HMRC would randomly ring you up without confirming your identity first? If it were legitimate, they would send a proper letter instead of a dodgy phone call like that! - caller: Unknown
