Luckily, I wasn’t at home when they rang, so it went straight to my answerphone and caught their recorded message. I really hope people start catching on to these fake calls fast. I’m actually typing this because I just got another one! The giveaway’s the mention of a lawsuit, and anyone dealing with HMRC would definitely have had a letter first. It’s pretty alarming that a number from the Manchester area, which seems genuine, can be used like this. My 80-year-old mother-in-law got a call from one of these scammer lot today. They used the exact same lines as others have mentioned before, threatening to send the police and take legal action if she didn’t do what they wanted. They were pretty pushy, trying to get her National Insurance number and all that. It was really frightening for her, and she ended up quite shaken. I had a similar thing happen to me recently. I was waiting on a call from HMRC so when I got the ring, I went ahead and pressed 1. The bloke on the other end had an Asian accent and seemed a bit rattled when I started asking questions. He wanted my personal info but I told him straight away, HMRC already have that, so I wouldn’t be giving out anything else unless he proved he was genuine. He got more and more annoyed, even raising his voice when I refused to answer. Eventually, he just hung up on me!

SCAM alert. Got an automated message saying HMRC was calling about a legal issue and to press 1 to talk to someone. Received two calls one after the other on separate home landlines. Ended up talking to two different callers, probably from a call centre abroad. When I asked the second one for a reference number, he spelled out something rude like "Fxxx xxx", and when I pressed for an agent ID, it got even more offensive.
