10 January 2014: I received a total of five missed calls today from the number 01618265780 while I was out and about. It’s a curious coincidence that whenever I leave my mobile behind at home, the calls come thick and fast, yet when I have it on me, it's like I'm invisible-nobody bothers to ring me! I’ve no clue who’s trying to get in touch, as I don’t recognise this number at all. If the matter was truly urgent, I’m sure they’d attempt to reach me again, wouldn’t they? It seems they can’t be bothered to leave a message, which is just as well since my voicemail is currently switched off.

My wife received a rather dodgy call from this number. Our son answered her phone, and when he handed it over, they immediately inquired if she was older than 18. Scammers and automated systems just dial through loads of possible numbers and take note of which ones answer. The area codes for mobiles are standard within each network. Each provider has its own five-digit prefix, so these automatic diallers go through them like 07785 000001, 07785 000002, 07875 000003, and so on. They’re not singling you out personally, they’re just casting a wide net to see who picks up.

My missus got a ring from this number earlier, they claimed to be from Orange and were trying to sell her a SIM on a contract for 16 quid a month. They then asked for her bank info but she hung up straight away.

This number keeps calling me constantly, like every single day for the past four days. I just ignore it and don't pick up. It's quite irritating having to keep looking at my missed calls, hoping it’s someone I know, but nah, it’s always some random number I don’t recognise.

Just received a ring from this number but didn’t pick up. Pretty sure they grabbed my number from a Gumtree ad I put up not long ago.

This number looks like it’s got an Old Trafford prefix, so maybe BT in Manchester would be able to shed some light on the spam calls that keep coming through, even though I’m on the Telephone Preference Service? It’s pretty annoying that these automated calls just don’t seem to care about the do-not-call list.
