Victims are urged not to engage, not to share information, and to hang up immediately. Reporting such calls to authorities and BT is recommended. Genuine BT staff do not make unsolicited support calls requesting remote access.

I got a call from 01389816908, a bloke with an Indian accent claiming to be from BT Technical Support. He said my internet was about to be disconnected 'cos I’d apparently been hacked. When I asked for a number to ring him back to check if it was legit, he gave me 0161 8189289. Said he’d sort it out for no charge. I looked up that number and ended up on this site. So just watch out for that first number too.

I've received two calls from this number, and I've specifically requested they drop me an email instead. The caller identified herself as Abi, but her accent was quite distinct. However, when I attempted to return the call, I heard a recording saying that the line couldn’t be connected. Quite peculiar, if you ask me!

Just like what others said, they didn’t hang up and kept rambling about someone trying to hack my wifi. Be careful and don't listen to a word they say.

I received a recorded message in an American accent, claiming my IP address was being accessed from multiple countries. They offered to provide a new IP address and router at no cost, instructing me to press 1 to speak to yet another foreign voice. When I asked for a contact number, they said it was supposedly from BT Openreach, but I’ve been given varying numbers in the past. It’s a complete con-steer clear! I'm utterly fed up with this nonsense!

Received a call from this number claiming to be from the technical department of BT. The person on the line insisted I needed to turn on my computer to resolve some issue they were supposedly aware of, stating that my device was being targeted by hackers from California.

I received a call from a chap claiming to be from the BT Technical Department. There was quite a bit of hubbub in the background, reminiscent of a bustling call centre. He had a foreign accent and provided a callback number, 016181 89289, insisting it belonged to his manager. He introduced himself as Peter Rashid. From what I’ve seen in other people's remarks, this seems rather suspect. Could it be a scam? It certainly looks like it!

A woman saying she was from BT phoned me saying my computer had been hacked and that I needed to follow her instructions on my laptop. I told her I wasn’t doing that and knew it was a scam, but she kept going on and said I had to switch off my PC right away to stop the hack. She also claimed she could help get rid of the hacker. I ended the call and reported it to BT, who just told me to ignore such calls and never share any details with them.

This number 01618189289 kept ringing my landline loads of times. A bloke with an Asian accent said there was some problem with my BT broadband. I didn’t pick up after I hung up first and then tried to call back. I spoke to BT and they told me it’s a scam. Never share any details with them. Best thing to do is just put the phone down straight away... or be really harsh to them like I do.

I had the same issue, there was a long pause on the call so pretty obvious it wasnt Manchester. She claimed my internet was being hacked and my neighbours were stealing it without me knowing - I told her this was a business phone! She got a bit flustered and said oh really? I said yes and she ought to realise if she’s really from BT - they already have all our details so she should be looking at them. Then she just hung up on me. The caller ID was blocked but when I asked for a contact number she gave me this one.

#SCAM# Got a call from an Indian call centre pretending to be a BT engineer saying there was a problem with my internet. They wanted me to let them control my laptop through the command prompt and started throwing around techy terms. Feels like they were trying to install something dodgy to get into my personal info. Got a call from this number earlier today, some guy saying about 7 or 8 people hacking my IP and that they’d cut my internet off at midnight for a month. He started getting really agitated so I said he was annoying me and I’d contact my internet provider. Then he just said “have a nice day” and threatened to switch me off at midnight before hanging up.

A bloke with a thick mid-Asian accent going by John Wilson rang me from an "INTERNATIONAL" number. He claimed my router had been hacked by at least 10 different people. He wanted me to follow some steps to fix it. I told him I’d already switched off the computer and unplugged the router. Then he told me to turn it back on, but I said no way since it was hacked. This kept going on for about 10 minutes. I found it pretty amusing, but it could be serious for anyone naive. TOTAL RIP-OFF. I asked him for a phone number to ring back and he gave me 0161-818928.

I received a rather concerning call from a chap named Jay who claimed that my IP address had been compromised. He insisted that I should log onto my device immediately. He identified himself as being from the technical support team at BT in Manchester. He even provided a BT reference number and a contact number, 01618189289, but when I asked for an email address, he became evasive. It definitely felt like a scam! I’m curious as to why this number hasn’t been flagged or blocked yet, as they seem rather convincing and could easily fool someone unsuspecting.

A guy with an Indian accent saying his name was Alex Martin from BT rang me today. He tried the usual scare tactics about our phone lines being hacked and that they’d have to cut off our Internet for 5 days to fix it. I didn’t let him talk much, the line was terrible so I guessed it wasn’t really BT. Asked him for his contact number and he gave me 0161-818-9289. Had a look it up and turns out it’s dodgy. 22 February 2018, 13:00 I’ve just received yet another scam call claiming to be from BT, insisting that my broadband connection is compromised! This is exactly like what everyone else is saying about this number. A lady with an English name but clearly Indian, struggling with English, pretending to be from BT. She claimed my router was hacked and tried to trick me into giving access to my computer. Really disappointing that BT don’t do more to put a stop to these scams!

Clara Watson - A woman with an Indian accent called me today at about 10:20am. She started by saying that my BT broadband might need to be cut off because there was a strong chance of hacking. She said I had to get on my laptop. When I said I couldn’t use my laptop, she kept pushing me to explain why I couldn’t access it. She was really eager for me to get on my laptop. I asked if I could have a number to ring back on because I found it hard to catch what she was saying and wanted to understand the issue better. She then gave me the number above and her name.

Scam alert, they pretended to be from BT but I’m actually with Virgin. Both BT and Virgin don’t ring you up about tech problems - they fix stuff on their side through their systems. I called Virgin after getting this dodgy call. They said if it happens again, just tell the caller you’ll be contacting Virgin’s tech support yourself to deal with it.
