I received a rather alarming phone call recently. A gentleman with a pronounced Indian accent, who identified himself as Austin Mellor, contacted my elderly parents. He insisted he was representing Microsoft, and rather aggressively urged my mother to switch on her laptop, threatening that it would be "blocked" if she didn’t comply. Thankfully, my mother had the wit to decline and suggested she’d consult one of her children before getting back to him. They provided a number for her to call, however, to my utter frustration, attempts to reach them have proven futile-nothing happens when I try to ring it back!

The chap went by the name of David Wright when he rang me, but let me tell you, he was exceedingly impolite. I requested his address and phone number for some due diligence, and all I got was that 0161 number mentioned above. He was quite belligerent, insisting I turn on my computer, even though I informed him that I already had two work laptops powered up. Then he had the audacity to threaten me by saying he'd block them, to which I boldly replied that he should go ahead. That's when I called him out as a scammer and ended the call.

Had a rather dodgy call from someone claiming to be "Sarah Jones" with a rather thick Indian accent, ringing me up from 012034242603. She insisted that my computer was being compromised and wanted me to verify my machine's I.D. number. I couldn't track down any credible information for that number, so I expressed my doubts about her affiliation with Microsoft. She then offered me an alternative number, 0161, to ring back and confirm her identity. Naturally, I was suspicious, and just as I was about to hang up, another chap named "Brian" with a similar accent jumped on the line. He pushed the same story about them being from Microsoft and wanted me to check my computer. I told him outright that he was trying to pull a fast one and promptly ended the call!

I received a call from a chap named Brian on 0161 8182 363, claiming to be from Microsoft. He insisted that they had found numerous viruses on my computer and urged me to log in. I got the impression his intent was to either seize control of my device or introduce some nasty software onto it. I told him I'd be logging in shortly, then casually went to make myself a cuppa, leaving him hanging on the line. After about 15 minutes of waiting, he finally decided to give up! Clearly, this was a scammer, and I highly recommend that no one take any action based on their requests. A good tactic is to ask for your laptop's IP address; that should throw them totally off course!

The chap who rang introduced himself as Alan, but his accent was distinctly Indian. He claimed to be representing Microsoft regarding issues with my computer. When I requested his phone number, he actually provided it. I mentioned that I’m registered with the Telephone Preference Service, not that it seems to bother these callers. At that point, he abruptly hung up. I can’t help but think this won’t be the last I hear of such nonsense.
