I received a phone call from this number on a rather quiet Sunday morning around 10 o'clock. I wasn't familiar with it but chose to pick up anyway. To my pleasant surprise, it was regarding a much-anticipated hospital appointment coming up in just a matter of days! The appointment is set for North Manchester General, though the caller mentioned she represented Manchester University NHS Trust and assured me they could provide appointments at various hospitals they operate, depending on what was free. What a relief!

Staff there normally have patient details ready and will ask you personal questions to make sure they don't share any private info about your tests or appointments. This is the main contact number for Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. It covers multiple hospitals and a bunch of different departments. If you call 1471, you'll hear a recorded voice explaining this. Sure, scammers might do the same, but in my experience it was genuinely St Mary’s Hospital (which belongs to Manchester Royal Infirmary) ringing to set up an appointment.

This number starting with 0161 is nothing but a complete sham! I've had to block a multitude of these calls, as they just keep altering the last digits to get through again. And to the individual claiming it's from the NHS, it's quite amusing because genuine NHS calls always leave a message for you to return the call. In Manchester, these 0161 calls incessantly bombard my phone-if you value your peace, just block them! But be warned, they'll soon come back with a different 0161 number, so keep your guard up!

Any calls from 0161 numbers claiming to be from Manchester are just scams. I don’t live anywhere near Manchester and these are definitely con artists. If you don’t wanna get tricked, just block the number. I’ve already blocked about 10 different 0161 numbers and others as well. Stay safe!

They rang me twice but I missed both calls. When I called back, it sounded like it was from Manchester University care team. They said they'll call me again, but if you need help just get in touch with your care advisor. All my care stuff is actually handled in Salford.

I merely answered the landline after quite a long while-probably over a year, mind you-just to check if it was still operational. To my surprise, there were quite a few missed calls. Given that I haven't been feeling under the weather and that chaps seem to reckon it’s linked to the NHS, I can only assume it was a case of those pesky spam calls related to the ongoing panic-demic!

I didn't pick up and they didn’t leave any voicemail (0161 701 9999). But later my husband got in touch to let me know they'd brought his appointment forward today at Manchester Royal Infirmary. I reckon they called him first, he didn’t answer, so they tried me as the emergency contact. I assume they called him again after and he either got through or they left a message. (We normally don’t answer unknown numbers and just wait for a voicemail if it’s something important). From what I've read here, looks like this number is genuine.

Got a call just after 10pm saying they were from out of hours doctors and asked for my name. I thought they’d already know it, so I asked who they wanted. They said “Andrew”. I told them no Andrew lived here, they said sorry and ended the call. Then, around 1am, another call came from a different Manchester “NHS” number. I answered but stayed silent, and this time it was a woman on the line. Nobody organising MRIs should be ringing people so late. Definitely don’t trust these calls. Always check who they want to speak to before saying anything.

Choosing the NHS to trick people is just awful.

So I called 01617019999 after seeing I missed a call from it. Got the voicemail and some bloke said “this is the NHS” and told me he’d call back and to pick up next time. Honestly, NHS wouldn’t leave a message like that, no way. I’m just gonna block the number. Hopefully that’s useful.

That number belongs to Manchester University Foundation Trust hospitals like Manchester Royal Infirmary and Wythenshawe. They use it to ring family members when someone is admitted. It’s a legit number. You won’t be able to return the call on it but they tend to ring back if they need to. If you want, you can always call the hospital main switchboard yourself.
