It seems these firms have no genuine need for your phone number. What they do is employ an automated dialling system that systematically goes through every possible number combination until it hits upon one that rings. When their system identifies it as a live line, they simply log it and continue their relentless calling spree until you pick up. Should you engage in conversation, they’ll seamlessly connect you to a call centre rep. But if you happen to answer and remain silent, the system surmises it has landed on a voicemail and promptly ends the call.
