If you get a weird number like that, it’s always a good idea to look it up on the internet first.10 monthsEarlier today, I got a phone call from someone saying they were from the Council. At one point, he mentioned a department that doesn’t actually exist there. When I pointed that out, he said he worked for something called “Legal Assist.” I asked why Legal Assist would be making claims calls, and he told me he was a kind of third-party agent. When I asked for the name of his company, he couldn’t give me one but said his email had “Legal Assist” in it. He then suggested that because I’m employed full-time, I might not be able to handle a claim myself and offered to do it for me. To do this, he wanted me to send copies of my ID and bills. I told him I wasn’t comfortable sharing such personal info, especially not over insecure channels, but he insisted it was normal procedure. Then he told me to send the docs via WhatsApp but didn’t give me any secure way to verify who he was. When I questioned him more, especially since Legal Assist website says they’re available 24/7 but he claimed only Monday to Friday until 5pm, he couldn’t answer and just pressed me again if I wanted his help. I refused and he hung up suddenly.
